It (or its metabolites) assures the structural integrity and signalling functions of cell membranes; in addition, it is the major source of methyl groups in the diet (one of cholines metabolites, betaine, participates in the methylation of homocysteine to form methionine), and it directly affects cholinergic neurotransmission and the transport of lipids from the liver. One of the functional consequences of dietary choline deficiency in humans is the development of liver damage ie, elevated serum aminotransferase concentrations; and muscle damage ie, elevated serum creatine phosphokinase concentrations. Choline deficiency has also been associated with DNA damage. The objective of a study was to ascertain whether lymphocytes from choline-deficient humans had greater DNA damage and apoptosis than did those from choline-sufficient humans. Fifty-one men and women aged 1870 years were fed a diet containing the recommended adequate intake of choline (control; 550 mg choline per 70 kg body weight per day) for 10 days. They then were fed a choline-deficient diet for up to 42 days before repletion with 138550 mg choline/day. All subjects fed the choline-deficient diet (? 50 mg choline per 70 kg body weight per day) had lymphocyte DNA damage, as assessed by COMET assay, twice that found (tail moment) when they were fed the control diet. The subjects who developed organ dysfunction (liver or muscle) when fed the choline-deficient diet had significantly more apoptotic lymphocytes, as assessed by the activated caspase-3 assay, than when fed the control diet. A choline-deficient diet increased DNA damage in humans. Subjects in whom these diets induced liver or muscle dysfunction also had higher rates of apoptosis in their peripheral lymphocytes than did subjects who did not develop organ dysfunction (1). Choline is also the precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and for phosphatidylcholine, a structural component of very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL), which is essential for normal lipid-cholesterol transport. Choline is the precursor for betaine, but the effects of choline supplementation on plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations in healthy humans are unknown. The objective of a crossover study was to investigate whether supplementation with phosphatidylcholine, the form in which choline occurs in foods, reduces fasting and postmethionine-loading concentrations of plasma tHcy in healthy men with mildly elevated plasma tHcy concentrations. 26 men ingested ?2.6 g choline/day (as phosphatidylcholine) or a placebo oil mixture for 2 weeks in random order. A high daily dose of choline, supplemented as phosphatidylcholine, lowers fasting as well as postmethionine-loading plasma tHcy concentrations in healthy men with mildly elevated tHcy concentrations (2).

Dandelion root is traditionally used in Herbal Medicine to help increase bile flow (cholagogue) and as a diuretic at 1.5-24 Grams per day, dried root (3).

L-Methionine helps to support liver function at 108.5-1,000 mg per day (4).

References: 1 da Costa KA, Niculescu MD, Craciunescu CN, Fischer LM, Zeisel SH.Choline deficiency increases lymphocyte apoptosis and DNA damage in humans.Am J ClinNutr. 2006 Jul;84(1):88-94.Yellow highlights 2 Olthof MR, Brink EJ, Katan MB, Verhoef P.Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men.Am J ClinNutr. 2005 Jul;82(1):111-7.Yellow highlights 3 NHPD Monograph on Dandelion. June 2009.

Additional product info: Fish oils may improve cardiovascular health by altering lipid metabolism, inducing haemodynamic changes, decreasing arrhythmias, modulating platelet function, improving endothelial function and inhibiting inflammatory pathways (4). In fact, fish oil is recognized by the NHPD of Health Canada to help support and maintain cardiovascular health (1). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 22:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) are the two principal omega-3 fatty acids in marine oils. Recent data from human studies showed that these two fatty acids have different effects on serum lipids, lipoproteins, serum glucose, blood pressure, heart rate and endothelial function (5). Studies also showed that EPA (1.6 grams daily) and DHA (1.2 grams daily) generate bioactive lipid mediators that reduce inflammation and polymorphonuclear leukocyte recruitment in numerous inflammatory disease models (6),(7) . While both EPA (2.2-4.8 grams per day) and DHA (2.3-4.9 grams per day) decrease TAG levels, only DHA appears to increase HDL and LDL particle size. Evidence to date also suggests that DHA is more efficient in decreasing blood pressure, heart rate and platelet aggregation compared to EPA (8). EPA (4 grams daily), but not DHA (4 grams daily), appears to increase fasting glucose concentrations (9). Thus, reduction of postprandial triacylglycerol (TG) concentration may be cardioprotective. Studies have shown that chronic omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (4 grams EPA or 4 grams DHA daily) significantly lowers postprandial TG concentrations regardless of the type of fat in test meal (10).

EPA and DHA are also crucial to brain development and normal brain functioning. DHA is particularly important to brain functioning due to its influence on neural membrane properties, which modulate cell signalling. DHA concentration in the brain decreases with age in humans and this has been postulated to be consequential to the age-related deterioration in central nervous system functions (11). Fish oil supplementation helps support cognitive health and brain function (12).

Flaxseed contains 35% of its mass as oil, of which 55% is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) (13). Human studies have shown that flaxseed oil (approximately 4 tablespoons/day) can modestly reduce serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations, reduce postprandial glucose absorption, decrease some markers of inflammation, and raise serum levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, ALA and eicosapentaenoic acid (14). The compliance or elasticity of the arterial system, an important index of circulatory function, diminishes with increasing cardiovascular risk. Systemic arterial compliance has been shown to improve through eating of fish and fish oil. Similarly, enhanced arterial compliance was reported following 4 weeks of flaxseed oil supplementation (equivalent of 20 grams ALA daily), in obese patients (15). Finally, flaxseed oil decreases platelet aggregation and increases platelet activating inhibitor-1 and bleeding time (16).

Borage seed oil is from Borago officinalis and contains a high amount of the essential omega-6 unsaturated fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The beneficial effect of borage seed oil on plasma lipids is prominent. Supplementation of borage oil for twelve weeks, alone (2 g GLA/day) or in combination with other fatty acids (2 grams GLA+STA+EPA/day) induced significant changes in the fatty acid composition of the immune cells of healthy adults (18). Borage oil, fish oil, and their combination (3.5 gm omega-3 fatty acids daily in a 2.1 gm EPA/1.4 gm DHA ratio, 1.8 gm/d GLA, or 7 fish oil and 6 borage oil combined) have exhibited improvement in the lipid profile at 9 and 18 months. These treatments significantly reduced total and LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, increased HDL-cholesterol, and improved the atherogenic index (19).

References: 4. These embryological tissues are harvested in spring, when their energetic components are at their highest levels, and many of these beneficial components are lost in fully developed plants once chlorophyll is formed.

Intest-gen is formulated to support normal gastrointestinal structure and function in adults. Phytoembryotherapy harnesses meristem cells harvested in spring, when growth factors, plant hormones, enzymes, nucleic acids, and polyphenols are at their highest concentrations. The formula is designed to support normal gastrointestinal structure and function, including healthy digestive function and normal lipid metabolism.

What It Is

Intest-gen is a 0.5 fl oz (15 mL) oral liquid dietary supplement from Genestra Brands' PHYTO-GEN line, formulated as 1:20 macerates of three embryological plant tissues: English walnut (Juglans regia) bud, rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) young shoot, and lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) young shoot, each delivering 4.7 mg dried equivalent per 10-drop serving. The base contains purified water, ethanol (grain), and glycerin.

How It Works

Phytoembryotherapy utilizes undifferentiated plant meristem cells — harvested from buds and young shoots in spring — that are rich in growth factors, plant hormones, enzymes, nucleic acids, and phytonutrients such as polyphenols and flavonoids. These embryological tissues are used because many of these beneficial components are lost in fully developed plants once chlorophyll is formed, and their energetic components are at their highest levels during the active spring growth cycle. Together, the English walnut bud, rosemary young shoot, and lingonberry young shoot extracts in Intest-gen support normal gastrointestinal function, help maintain the normal intestinal mucosal lining, promote normal lipid metabolism, and support normal pancreatic exocrine function.

When To Use It

Intest-gen is intended for adults seeking support for normal gastrointestinal function and healthy digestive health.
